The village of Bemposta, in the municipality of Penamacor, will once again celebrate its historical heritage with the “Foral da Vila de Bemposta” event, taking place on 30 and 31 May 2026.
Organised by the Associação Desportiva, Recreativa e Cultural de Bemposta, the event marks 516 years since King Manuel I granted the village its Manueline foral in 1510 — an important moment that officially recognised Bemposta’s administrative autonomy and historical importance in the region.
Over the two days, visitors will be able to enjoy a programme inspired by medieval traditions and local history. Activities include traditional craft demonstrations, historical recreations, exhibitions of medieval weaponry, guided visits through the village and cultural entertainment for all ages.
One of the highlights of the celebrations will be the recreation of the public reading of the foral, helping visitors better understand the historical significance of these royal charters in Portugal’s history.
Bemposta was once an independent municipality and still preserves several symbols of that period, including its historic pillory, former town hall and traces of its medieval and Roman past.
The event offers an excellent opportunity to discover one of the most historically rich villages in the Beira Baixa region while experiencing local traditions and community spirit.
